Science publisher Springer announced yesterday that it has launched a new mobile app for iPhone and iPod Touch devices. The free app allows users to access to the publisher’s SpringerLink platform.
The app allows unlimited access to SpringerLink’s free content, including abstracts, book and journal covers, and more than 127,000 open-access research articles. Full-text articles from other publications are available to users with institutional subscriptions. Users on subscriber-based networks will be able to view such materials immediately; on other networks, users will be required to log in to the SpringerLink website, and then be redirected to the requested full-text article.
Articles and chapters from the entire SpringerLink collection are available via the new SpringerLink app, according to Nathan Brothers, Springer’s product manager for mobile application and platform development. That includes material available through other Springer apps; for example, Springer previously released an iPhone app for the journal European Radiology, which is also available in SpringerLink.
The app can also be used on iPad devices by rescaling the display in “x2” mode, he said. Brothers declined comment at this time when asked if apps for Android or other platforms were planned or in development.
As LJ has reported, several new apps have been unveiled by publishers and other library vendors in recent weeks, including EBSCO’s Android version of its EBSCOhost app and SirsiDynix’s new Android and customizable versions of its BookMyne app.
