Baker & Taylor Acquires Maker of CollectionHQ

Distributor Baker & Taylor today announced that it has acquired Glasgow, Scotland-based company Bridgeall Libraries, the maker of CollectionHQ collection development software-as-a-service for libraries. Terms were not disclosed.

EBSCO Unveils Android App

EBSCO released a free Android version of its EBSCOhost app this week, following on its iPhone/iPad app, which was released in March. The app lets users access EBSCOhost content on both Android phones and tablets.

Kurt Vonnegut Memorial Library Tackling Digitization

The Kurt Vonnegut Memorial Library recently announced that it has received a grant to tackle five projects for the library, including a digitization project involving Vonnegut manuscripts.

IMLS Seeks Feedback on Digital Inclusiveness Framework

The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), in conjunction with the International City/County Management Association and the Seattle-based University of Washington Information School’s Technology & Social Change Group, earlier this month announced its draft framework proposal on building “digitally inclusive communities.” The organizations are seeking public input on the proposal via an online survey through this Wednesday, November 30.

Google’s popular social networking site, Google+, was launched in June of this year, and has since built up a membership of more than 40 million users. But only earlier this month did Google begin allowing organizations, and not just individuals, to create their own pages on the site.

Goodreads Choice Awards Enters Home Stretch, with 389,000 Voters to Date

Goodreads, the largest social networking site aimed specifically at readers, has more than 11 million book user-generated reviews and 100 million ratings in its database. Its members clearly have strong opinions—and Goodreads is harnessing them once again for its 2011 Goodreads Choice Awards.

DPLA Chair Palfrey Moving to Andover

John Palfrey, a Harvard Law School professor and the vice dean for library and information resources at the Harvard Law School Library, will be moving to Philips Academy Andover as its new head of school as of July 2012, according to announcements from both institutions today.

Authors Guild Weighs in on Amazon Lending Library

The Authors Guild called Amazon’s recently launched ebook lending library a “mess” and claimed that Amazon appeared to breaching contracts with some publishers by including their titles in the lending program.

ProQuest Reorganizes Business Structure

ProQuest announced this week that it was moving to a new structure consisting of six “strategic business units,” including one comprised of its Serials Solutions and Bowker businesses. The new arrangement, according to the announcement, was created by CEO Kurt Sanford, who joined the company in July.
