As the ALA annual conference got under way, ALA President Molly Raphael welcomed the news that Penguin was putting its toe back in the library ebook lending waters
Big Six publisher Penguin Group, the New York Public Library (NYPL), the Brooklyn Public Library (BPL), and 3M Library Systems today announced a pilot project to make Penguin ebooks available to patrons of The New York and Brooklyn public libraries six months after initial publication. The program will begin in August and, if successful, could roll out across the country. The move comes four months after Penguin pulled out of its contract with OverDrive.
3M Library Systems will have representatives discussing new partnerships with INscribe Digital, Smashwords, The Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Group and the National Book Network (NBN) at next week’s Book Expo America conference in New York, the company announced on May 31. Together, these new partnerships will increase the ebook system’s total list of offerings by more than 100,000, effectively doubling its collection to more than 200,000 titles from more than 300 publishers.

After an “upbeat and productive” meeting with leaders of the American Library Association on Tuesday, Random House reaffirmed its commitment to library lending of the company’s entire portfolio of ebook titles. At the same time, the company has announced that effective March 1 it is raising ebook prices that it charges library wholesalers such as OverDrive, 3M, and Ingram, which set the ultimate price libraries will pay to lease ebooks.
